Re: The Council of Elders: Lost Fans Age 35 & Over - Lucky Thread #7
I have good news!
I retired today!
Iv'e worked at my job for 27 years, and in the last few years, my legs and feet have gotten progressively worse.
Now, my left knee has become almost impossible to stand on for any length of time.
My wife has been begging me to retire for a couple years now, and I really dont have much choice anymore, so after discussing it with her this last weekend, I took the plunge, so to speak.
We have a thing in place at my job where if the number of years you've been there and your age add up to 70, you can retire and keep your insurance for the rest of your life. (although it's better if my wife just adds me to her insurance where she works.) I started that process today.
After we get this insurance deal hammered out, I'm gonna apply for disability. Considering my numerous leg problems over the years, and how well documented they all are, I hope to get it without too much trouble.
Now! let me tell you how it feels to be free!
After filling out all my paperwork today and leaving the plant for the last time, I decided to go treat myself to Burger King, and on the way, I felt like Morgan Freeman's character at the end of "The Shawshank Redemption" riding down the highway on the bus toward an uncertain future thinking about the kind of excitement only a free man can feel!
After getting home, I sat out on my back porch watching the squirrels play in the trees as the shadows lenghthened across the yard in the cool of the early autumn evening. I now know how it feels to be a retired country gentleman. I've dreamed of this day for decades!
And...there are MANY jealous (Former) coworkers grumbling on the job tonight!
Does it get any better than this?...I dont think so!

Thanks for the well wishes, everyone!
I'm still waiting for my insurance to transfer over to my wife's coverage...then I need to get to a doctor about my foot, and then, start the process of applying for disability.
Here's hoping and praying it all works out!

Hey Tom, Hey all!
I was in Houston during the storm and delayed. I acted quickly and switched our flight (we were supposed to fly home the Monday of the storm). Many waited and were stranded there through the week. We flew home on the leading edge of the storm. Had a barf bag in one hand and my rosary in the other. (only needed the rosary, thank goodness)
Many of my friends from Long Island and New Jersey were affected, some devastated. Some lost everything. A few still waiting for heat and power, but they don't want to leave their home. I don't blame them. It's so heartbreaking. So much of where I grew up is destroyed. It looks like a war zone. I pray that the recovery process is speedy and people can get their lives back together.
Here's to a Happy Thanksgiving to all. I hope you're all OK and have much to be thankful for. Eat a lot, hug a lot and enjoy the day.
Tom - how are you loving retirement?

Still running around on doctor visits trying to get a handle on my knee and foot problems...just had an MRI on my knee, and I'm waiting for the results.
Got some major cookin' to do tomorrow, & I'm hoping to get the Christmas tree up this weekend!
Here's wishing everyone a happy holiday season!
