Yeah, I was reading somewhere that he's not "dead" but that his soul was sucked out, which is definitely a dementor trick
Maybe that leaves it open for him to get "re-souled" somehow? But I think they needed him "dead" at least to start with so that Mulan and Aurora had a reason to be pissed off at Snow and Emma when they arrive in FTL
